Florida State women’s basketball coach Brooke Wyckoff, who underwent surgery Tuesday after being diagnosed with breast cancer, expects to be on the sideline for Monday’s season-opener against Charleston Southern.
“She was telling me her plans about rejoining the team and that says a lot about her,” said Vanessa Fuchs, a former FSU athletics administrator and Wyckoff’s roommate when the pair played basketball at FSU (1997-2001).
“Brooke is incredibly committed with everything she does.”
Wyckoff, 43, was “recovering well” at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare following surgery to remove a cancerous mass, and her long-term prognosis is “excellent,” according to FSU.
Wyckoff, in her second season, did not coach the 18th-ranked Seminoles in their exhibition game Wednesday against Clayton State.
“My team of doctors along with the medical staff at TMH and I are very optimistic that this can be successfully dealt with while maintaining a high quality, active lifestyle,” Wyckoff said through the school in advance of the surgery.
“I am very comfortable with the plan for surgery and post-surgical treatment, and I am looking forward to continuing to lead our women’s basketball program through another successful season.”
The surgery came on the final day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed in October each year to raise awareness for the disease.
Word of Wyckoff’s diagnosis and surgery also came just over a week after Georgetown women’s basketball coach Tasha Butts, 41, died after a two-year fight with breast cancer.
Wyckoff is synonymous with FSU’s women’s basketball.
She served 10 years as an assistant coach under Sue Semrau, was inducted into the FSU Hall of Fame in 2011, and her No. 21 jersey is retired. Wyckoff, from West Chester, Ohio, scored 1,350 career points and ranks second all-time at FSU with 209 blocked shots.
The Seminole Nation rallied around Wyckoff after the school released news of her diagnosis and surgery Tuesday.
“I heard from Brooke prior to her surgery and I am grateful the prognosis is positive,” Fuchs said.
“She is one of the toughest, most resilient person I know. She has a really strong community of family and close friends who are going to really around her and fight through this, to stay strong and to stay positive.”
Michael Alford, FSU’s vice president and athletic director, also pointed to Wyckoff’s “positive attitude and proactive nature.”
Wyckoff led FSU to its 10th consecutive NCAA Tournament in her first season as head coach last year, guiding the Seminoles to a 23-10 record.
“Obviously, our utmost concern is for Brooke and her family, and we will be fully supportive in every way as we navigate this situation together,” Alford said. “Brooke’s positive attitude and proactive nature is a tremendous asset for her and illuminates the importance of being thorough and aggressive in attacking this illness.”
