A French woman underwent radiotherapy in the wrong breast in a medical blunder that now risks her cancer spreading.
The patient, who has not been named, was treated in her healthy breast for 25 of her 28 days of scheduled therapy at a hospital in the city of Tours.
The error, believed to have been caused by a doctor’s careless notations, now moderately increases the woman’s risk of developing radiation-induced cancer in her healthy breast.
The French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) said the error could be linked to “discordant information in the report of the initial medical consultation”.
The agency told French news outlet France Bleu that the patient’s doctor misidentified the location of her cancer from her charts.
Not the first mistake
The patient was informed of the mistake and is now undergoing a new treatment plan. However, concerns were raised that it was not the first time such an error had been made.
The ASN pointed to a similar mistake by the Tours Regional University Hospital Centre’s oncology and radiotherapy unit in which a patient was treated for cancer on the wrong ear.
Fortunately, the mistake was discovered after the first radiotherapy session.
The hospital has two months to submit a report to the ASN that includes an in-depth analysis of how the mistake occurred and a plan of action for the authority to approve.
In 2016, a similar incident was reported at the Créteil Intercommunal Hospital Centre in a suburb of Paris, where a woman underwent 22 radiation sessions on the wrong breast. It was only discovered after her husband noticed redness around her healthy breast.
