A coalition of El Paso businesses and institutions gathered Monday to announce the fundraising haul from their breast cancer screening initiative.

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC), together with Texas-based alcohol merchandiser L&F Distributors and locally-owned tequila company El Perro Grande launched a campaign to enhance screening access in underserved Borderplex regions.

The ceremony took place Monday morning at the Medical Sciences Building II (MSB II) on TTUHSC's campus.

Portions of every bottle of El Perro Grande sold throughout October -- recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month -- were donated to the cause, culminating in more than 640 bottles sold totaling $10,000.

On top of that, El Perro Grande Tequila donated an additional $3,000.

Representatives from each organization shared valuable insights about the campaign's achievements, which was aimed at promoting breast cancer screenings and education in the community.

Lisa Peisen, managing partner of L&F Distributors West, told KFOX14/CBS4,

Early prevention is extremely important and it shouldn't have financial restraints -- you shouldn't be limited to what you can or can't do, just because you can't afford to get a screening. And so we're so excited to be able to play a very small but pivotal role in helping Texas Tech, who's done so much for the city of El Paso in the short time that they've been here.

Peisen, along with Renard Johnson, founder of El Perro Grande Tequila, have been steadfast supporters of the university’s mission to close health disparities and expand access to health care and education in the Borderplex region.

"When L&F and Texas Tech reached out to us, we said we wanted to be a part of this," said Johnson. "We wanted to do our part to provide screenings for people that may not be able to get it. So this was a big deal for us to be part of this."

Both Johnson and Peisen have personal stories of friends and loved ones who have suffered from breast cancer.

According to the National Cancer Insitute, in the Borderplex community specifically, breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among Hispanic women.

In 2023, an estimated 20,750 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in Hispanic women in the U.S., with an estimated 3,200 Hispanic women dying from the disease.

Early detection is the key to fighting breast cancer, and diagnostic tests such as mammograms can identify the disease in its early stages.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an early diagnosis of breast cancer will improve a cancer warrior’s chance of surviving five more years by 99%.
