SEATAC, Wash. — TSA said it recovered a knife hidden inside a loaf of bread as it made its way through security at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Wednesday.
TSA spokesperson Lorie Dankers said the incident is a perfect example of what what people try to do to conceal items when traveling.
"In that loaf of bread was a knife. Someone had stuck a knife in the middle of the loaf of bread cause they wanted to take their knife through the checkpoint. They thought the x-ray wouldn't detect that. Well of course it did," said Dankers.
Dankers said that person will now face a fine for trying to sneak a prohibited item through.
That's not the only type of weapon passengers try to get through. TSA also sees loaded guns regularly.
"We're getting ready to break a record for the number of guns travelers have brought in their carry on luggage. That's not a record that we wanted to break," Dankers said. "People say they forgot their firearm was in their carry on luggage but I would like to remind people the number one rule of firearm ownership is know where your gun is at all times so that is not an acceptable excuse."
The Port of Seattle anticipates Thanksgiving travel this year to be "one of the busiest" in its history.
The Port of Seattle said the number of passengers passing through the airport over the Thanksgiving holiday is expected to be at or slightly above 2019 and 11% above 2022 levels.
The airport expects 1.5 million people to be traveling through the airport between Thursday, Nov. 16 and Monday, Nov. 27.
