STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Anthony Campitiello bakes a special bread at this time of year for Alfonso’s customers. The fennel seed-flecked, twisty roll which sells for 80 cents a pop comes to the Castleton Corners bakery in honor of St. Anthony Day, a feast day of the saint celebrated on June 13.

If you’re an Anthony, Antoinette, Antonio, Antonello, Tony, Toni or some derivation thereof, this Sunday is your special day. And there’s a Mass for that. Fr. Eugene at St. Rita’s will offer loaves of bread at all the services on Saturday and Sunday. He places the St. Anthony statue on the altar for the feast day.

This year, historic St. Anthony of Padua in Travis will mark the day at the weekly 11 a.m. Mass. In years past, there has been a procession through the streets around the church.

Father John Wroblewski, pastor of Our Lady of Pity/St. Anthony of Padua, educates on the saint. He was known in his lifetime to be a great miracle worker.

The man of honor died on June 13, 1231. The number “13” is associated with the saint — and 13 is a lucky number by Italian standards.

The saint was from Portugal but Anthony is associated with Italy.

Father Wroblewski has explained this Italian connection with St. Anthony like this: “First he decided to be an Augustinian and then he joined the Franciscans. He decided to join the martyrs of Christ because he heard the Franciscans were martyred in Morocco. He got deadly sick so he was sent home to Portugal. There was a great storm at sea and the ship ended up in Sicily. He ended up in Padua in Northern Italy. That’s why [people] think he’s Italian, but he’s not.”

Currently, St. Anthony’s tongue and jawbone are preserved at La Basilico del Santo in Padua, Italy. That relic came to Staten Island in April 2009.

Another tradition of St. Anthony persists: upon the loss of an object or if something goes missing, a person should utter a prayer. The words are, “St. Anthony! St. Anthony! Please come around. For something is lost and must be found.” And, if the words are heard, the item should turn up.
