Chef Lance Ebert is a one man show.
For the last 15 weeks he has created a name for himself known by East Cliff locals as the Bread Boy. Four times a week, he hops on his souped-up Vespa and brings freshly made cannoli and Focaccia bread to 38th Avenue and East Cliff Drive.
Ebert has been in the food industry since he was 14 years old, and when the pandemic hit, he wasn’t going to let that stop him. He had to find a way to survive, and wanted to use his passion to bring artisan bread and pastries to his community. His goal is to spread love and joy using food. “Food executed very well, doesn’t need to be in a fine dining restaurant,” he said.
Using his Italian roots, Ebert is creating some freshly baked magic on wheels. He keeps his standards very high, and uses local farms as much as possible. He makes his own ricotta which becomes the base for the cannoli. He bakes everything fresh, only selling what was made that day.
Four days a week, catch Ebert next to his Santa Cruz Bread Boy sign wearing a big smile and a beanie eager to sell you one of his 80-100 ready to make cannolis or 20-26 loafs of his bread.
He heads to his favorite spot at 5 p.m. Thursdays and at 10 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Get there early, because he leaves once he sells out, and he always sells out!
The menu constantly changes and is shared on Instagram @s.c.bread.boy. Currently he’s serving up a variety of cannoli: fresh blackberry with cookie, chocolate chip Brown Butter Almond, pistachio, and the crowd favorite, Captain Crunch. His current Focaccia is an everything bagel.
