Ben’s Bread Plans New Bakery in Phinney Ridge

After six years building a strong reputation as a pop-up, Ben’s Bread — from acclaimed breadmaker Ben Campbell and wife Megan — will open a new bakery in Phinney Ridge this fall. As the name promises, the location will feature loaves of bread from Campbell (formerly of Sea Creatures and Lark), plus doughnuts, biscuits, breakfast sandwiches, and grain bowls; drinks include espresso, beer, and wine. According to the official announcement, the 1,400 square-foot space at 7009 Greenwood Avenue N will also host some dinner collaborations with local chefs, as well as baking classes. There will be an outdoor patio and views into the bakery itself so customers can see the process. While the Campbells get the location into shape over the next few months, Ben’s Bread will have a couple of more projects in the works this summer, including a French bread pizza collaboration with Post Alley Pizza in late June, and a final pop-up July 29.

Gov. Jay Inslee Lifts Statewide Delivery App Fee Cap

With Washington state prepared to reopen the economy by June 30, one significant mandate targeted at delivery companies is falling by the wayside. Gov. Jay Inslee has rolled back a statewide cap on fees charged to restaurants by third-party apps such as Uber Eats, DoorDash, and GrubHub, which had been in effect since November 2020. While the move may open the door to higher fees to restaurants across the state, Seattle still has its own 15 percent fee cap in place, and the city council also recently instituted a new rule which requires delivery apps to have written contracts with restaurants before listing them on their platforms. Those citywide laws may mitigate any impacts from Inslee’s recent move.

Truffles Specialist Is Latest to Join Pop-up Scene at Former Ballard Blossom

A new sweets purveyor is selling its wares in a former flower shop. Per My Ballard, the mainly online retailer Truffles and More will be popping up at 1766 NW Market Street starting Saturday, June 26. The business makes truffles in 13 different flavors, including both boozy (frangelico, mezcal) and non-boozy versions; it also has a selection of cakes, cookies, and brownies. Those with a sweet tooth now have another solid option at the former Ballard Blossom building. The recently vacated space has been hosting pop-up businesses such as Zuri’s Donuts, a popular Lynnwood bakery that features playful creations, such as a flaming s’mores flavor.
