Several breads sold in supermarkets have undergone a nationwide recall since Thursday, March 31, due to a substance considered toxic.
Many batches of bread sold at Intermarché, Super U, and Netto contain a lot of alkali. This plant-derived molecule is used in medicine as a pain reliever and is naturally present in some seeds. The use of this molecule is not prohibited, but there is a limit set by EU regulations that it should not exceed.
A nationwide campaign was launched on Thursday, March 31, for consumers to return products that contain a lot of this molecule.
Four types of bread are affected by this recall campaign. The 350-gram rustic baguette was sold at Netto and Intermarché between February 21 and March 30, 2022. The 250-gram rustic baguette purchased between March 2 and 30, which was sold in the same stores, was also recalled.
