POTTSTOWN — The closing of the Friendly’s restaurant at the very visible corner of Shoemaker Road and Robinson Street marks the end of an era for the borough.
However, the space will not be empty for long.
As The Mercury reported in January, a Chipotle’s Mexican restaurant is planned for the site as well as other businesses.
The Chipotle will occupy about 2,000 square feet of 10,000 square feet of commercial space there, according to developer Bob Gueli of Gateway Construction. Other tenants have not yet been announced.
But that’s not all.
It has now been announced that on the west side of Robinson Street, on property adjacent to the Sakura Asian restaurant, a Panera Bread restaurant will be built.
Peggy Lee-Clark, executive director of Pottstown Area Economic Development, made the announcement to borough council this month.
Councilwoman Trenita Lindsay said news of the new Panera had spurred a number of reactions among her constituents. “People are really excited about it,” she said.
According to Gueli, construction of the new Panera is not expected to be completed until fall of 2023.
He also confirmed there has been discussion of the possible need for a intersection rotary at Robinson and Shoemaker, “or possibly a traffic signal.”
However, he said, “nothing will be determined until both Panera and Chipotle are completed so accurate traffic counts can be taken.”
