SOUTHINGTON – “No school should not mean no lunch” says Bread For Life Executive Director Donna Ayer, who announced that the non-profit’s Summer Lunch program will begin June 21 at DePaolo Middle School.
Ayer said that Bread For Life will be picking up the “Grab and Go” option that the local school district had offered throughout the school year over the summer. Families will be able to stop by the school at 385 Pleasant St. between 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday to pick up hot and healthy lunches at no cost. Additionally, lunch and children’s activities will be provided at Summer Brook Apartments at 35 Darling St. Monday, Wednesday and Friday from noon to 1 p.m. No registration is required.
“We know that in this economy the struggle has been even more testing on families and so we’re anticipating an uptick in usage,” said Ayer. “Since last year we have seen about a 40% increase in all of the areas that we serve.”
Ayer said that Bread for Life has offered hot lunches throughout the pandemic. They plan to continue to provide an outdoor, to-go service throughout the summer before moving the meals inside into their dining room during the fall. The Southington Community, she said, has continued to assist Bread For Life in their mission to feed those who may be struggling to meet their basic food needs.
“Nobody wants to see kids go hungry; everybody in the community has a heart for the kids,” she said.
In addition to the assistance that Bread For Life provides at Summer Brook and will provide at DePaolo Middle School, Ayer added that the non-profit organization also offers lunches for kids in local daycare and camp programs.
Ayer said that, at this time, the best way that people can assist Bread For Life is to provide them gift certificates to grocery stores and monetary donations. These, she said, will allow Bread For Life to purchase healthy, non-perishable food items to include with the lunches.
“Items can also be brought to our front porch for contactless drop-off,” said Ayer. “Juice boxes and individually packed snacks are also very helpful.”
Southington Bread For Life is located at 31 Vermont Ave. for those who wish to donate.
