Thanks to the Staten Island Running Association, the spirit of the annual Fourth of July Arielle Newman race was kept alive, along with the added benefit of helping those in need during these challenging times.

At a presentation held on the track at Monsignor Farrell High School, SIRA Board members Mike Schnall, Dana Koenigsberg, Michael McVey and Jeff Benjamin presented checks to Newman Scholarship recipients, Notre Dame Academy track seniors Melissa Holland and Julia Durkin. Another check was presented to the Notre Dame Club of Staten Island to support the Bread of Life Food Drive.

The proceeds were raised from SIRA’s Staten Island Firecracker 5K Virtual Run & Walk, which took place over the Fourth of July weekend.

“It’s really great to see so many people from the United Kingdom, Puerto Rico, Massachusetts, Florida and Oklahoma join local Staten Islanders in signing up, participating , running, walking and contributing to keep our annual races going although in a virtual format,” said SIRA chairman Jeff Benjamin. “We are very grateful to all of the contributors and participants who not only have helped in keeping the Bread of Life Food Drive going, but also in supporting the annual Arielle Newman scholarship, in whose spirit can continue even during this time of crisis.”

“The family of Arielle Newman would like to thank the Staten Island Running Association for organizing the Firecracker 5k Run,” said a statement from the Newman family. “As a result we were able to present two Notre Dame Academy 2020 track team members with awards...Julia Durkin will be attending Wagner College and Melissa Holland will be attending St Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.”

“We wish the award winners continued success in college and their future endeavors.”

The Bread Of Life Food Drive has been in existence for 29 years.

“This $1,000 donation will help the food pantries supported by the ND Bread of Life to feed many people in need and it is a challenge trying to meet the demand for food at our pantries due to the large increase in people now coming to food pantries for assistance in feeding their families,” said Joe Delaney, the Executive Director of the Notre Dame Club Bread of Life Food Drive.

“Not only are we addressing the need to feed, the working poor, the homeless, the elderly, but now we are addressing the need to help the thousands of people who have recently lost their jobs.”

Delaney further added, “This donation could not have been made at a better time in our fight against hunger on Staten Island.”
