EAST LANSING — The Michigan State University police chief will be stepping back from her position to focus on her health as she fights breast cancer.
Chief Kelly Roudebush, the first woman to lead MSUPD, is taking medical leave during her treatment for stage four breast cancer, the department posted on Facebook on Tuesday. Her leave was effective Tuesday.
Roudebush has been with MSUPD for 26 years, serving as deputy chief of the Field Services Bureau, a field training office, K9 handler, patrol shift commander, training and special events security coordinator and a threat assessment team commander.
Roudebush was appointed chief in November 2018 and took over the department in January 2019.
Doug Monette is now the interim chief.
The department's assistant chief, Valerie O'Brien, has been on paid administrative leave since February 2019. Her husband, Detective JJ Bradoc, has been on paid leave for the same amount of time.

MSU officials have refused to say why O'Brien and Bradoc are on leave, or why the internal investigation has spanned 18 months. Both have had their authority as law enforcement officers removed, according to personnel records.
A Title IX investigation involving MSUPD employees began shortly before O'Brien and Bradoc were placed on leave, but the university won't confirm if they are part of that investigation.
