New Pa. law requires insurers to cover breast MRIs, ultrasounds for women with high-risk factors for breast cancer - WFMZ Allentown

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Getting screened for breast cancer will now be more affordable for some women in Pennsylvania.

Governor Tom Wolf has signed a bill that will now require insurance providers to cover breast MRIs and ultrasounds for women with very dense breast tissue, as well as those at high risk of getting cancer.

Health experts say mammograms aren't always enough to detect a lump, and MRIs and ultrasounds are needed to provide more accuracy.

Under the law, the patient may be responsible for normal costs such as co-pays, co-insurance and/or deductibles based on the person's health insurance policy. The new law applies only to insurance companies that issue policies covered under Pennsylvania law. Implementation dates vary depending upon the patient’s particular insurance plan.

The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition says the new law will help save lives.
