TRUSSVILLE — Great Harvest Bread Co. Trussville is celebrating excellence in food service after receiving a 100 on its Jefferson County Health Department Inspection.
Despite multiple changes that the business had to make due to the coronavirus pandemic, owners David and Jennifer Snyder said the bakery has been able to successfully serve its loyal customers.
“When I saw the 100 I was a little shocked,” said David Snyder. “I never thought we would get one of those. We’ve had 99’s and 98’s, so we’ve flirted with it but over the two years it’s been just a little something.”
Along with reducing occupancy of the store, Great Harvest Bread Co. and other restaurants in Jefferson County had to make drastic changes to remain compliant with health orders from the county and the state.
Jennifer Snyder said the business also wanted to use the opportunity to inform the public about restrictions.
“We do have the signs on the door and signs in the bathroom,” said Jennifer Snyder. “We tried to put all the Jefferson County Health Department signs up everywhere we could.”
David Snyder said his employees made the changes easier.
“I’ve got an excellent staff,” David Snyder said. “They go above and beyond.”
It can be difficult to wear masks while working over an oven, but Great Harvest Bread Co. provided cloth masks for its team. Jennifer Snyder compared wearing a mask in a restaurant to playing football.
“You think about football players and everything they have to gear up in to stay safe,” said Jennifer Snyder. “The mask is just another requirement that we have to do and right now it’s our best option to try to help curb the difficulty that everything is putting on the health system.”
Another challenge the Great Harvest Bread Co. has faced over the past few months is construction on the new Half Shell Oyster House next door and road work that is underway at the intersection of Main Street and Chalkville Road.
“There are a lot of deterrents to get to where we are located and people go out of their way to come in and support us,” said David Snyder. “I can’t tell you enough how fortunate we are to have the client base that we do,”
“Trussville makes it easy for us to wrap our arms around them and just hug them as much as we can because it’s just such a great community,” said Jennifer Snyder.
Not only has the community stepped in to support Great Harvest Bread Co., but the Snyders said Trussville To Go has also helped business.
“Because of Trussville To Go, our business has picked up four or five times,” said Jennifer Snyder.
Jennifer Snyder said they considered doing delivery themselves when they first opened but they are now more than happy that they decided to allow Trussville To Go to handle deliveries.
“They can take care of our customers the best and they already have it organized,” said Jennifer Snyder. “Amanda and Ben [Short] have done it right. They have been amazing to partner with.”
The Snyders said Trussville To Go has also helped restaurant workers by employing them from local restaurants during the coronavirus crisis.
