Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan paid a secret, face-masked visit on Tuesday to a Los Angeles charity which focuses on gang intervention, rehab and re-entry, helping to prepare meals for hungry seniors and kids for delivery across the city in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's media team in Los Angeles announced the visit Wednesday after the charity, Homeboy Industries, posted pictures and thank yous on Twitter and Instagram.

"THANK YOU to Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, for their visit yesterday! Our Bakery & Café teams were thrilled to have them work alongside us to #FeedHOPE to Los Angeles," said the tweet by the charity, described as a "community social justice organization working to improve the lives of formerly incarcerated and previously gang-involved people in Los Angeles."

Though everyone in the group photo is wearing a face mask, Harry appeared to be the tall one in the second row, with Meghan just in front of him, standing in the bakery before a table with unbaked and unkneaded bread rounds being prepared for the oven.

On its Instagram page, Homeboy Industries said the 32-year-old organization provides annual support for about 9,000 people through job training and free services such as tattoo removal, mental health services, GED classes and legal services. The group also offers an 18-month job and re-entry training program for more than 400 men and women.

"Above all, we provide space for our clients to heal from inter-generational cycles of violence in a community of radical compassion," the Instagram post read.

Meghan, who attended a girls' Catholic high school in LA, is familiar with the organization because she knows its director, Father Greg Boyle, who worked with her school, Immaculate Heart High School, according to the Sussex media team.

She and her mother, Doria Ragland, once joined Boyle for a cooking workshop with Homeboy almost 20 years ago, and Meghan still remembers the tamale recipe she learned there.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were just ‘Harry and Meghan’ to the homies," Boyle said, as quoted by the Sussex media team. "They rolled up their sleeves and deeply engaged with our workers in the Bakery and Café. It was immediate kinship and heartening in its mutuality.”

"They are both down to earth and kind," added Mariana Enriquez, manager of the Homegirl cafe. "The staff was honored they took the time to see us, hear us and walk on our journey today. We will never forget it.”

"The Duke and Duchess connect deeply to Homeboy’s mission to welcome all people into a community of mutual kinship and love, focused on healing and contributing to the well-being of families and communities," according to a statement by their media team. "To them, Homeboy is a perfect example of how empathy, kindness, and compassion can change the world."

The latest Sussex public engagement was in keeping with the couple's charity activities since they turned up in Meghan's hometown of Los Angeles in March during the pandemic: They delivered food, she gave a Black Lives Matter-related video commencement speech for her high school, and they told nobody about what they were doing until it was over.

In this way, they hope to retain control over the message and any pictures generated, and at the same time elude the media and the paparazzi.

Exasperation with negative media coverage in the United Kingdom was one of the reasons the couple cited for their stunning decision in January to step away from their royal roles, pull up stakes and escape to LA, notorious capital of the notorious paparazzi.

Harry and Meghan have been little seen, at least officially, since they arrived in LA, in part because they've been locked down with 1-year-old baby Archie in a sprawling estate in the hills overlooking LA and Beverly Hills. Entertaining and parties are out, although they did post video and pictures of Archie for his birthday on May 6.

Still, they have maintained contact with some of their patronages in London via video conference calls. Meghan has been busy spreading messages of hope and empowerment via Zoom with the Hubb Community Kitchen and with Smart Works, the London charity that helps women find jobs.
