Laguna Beach Runner, Breast Cancer Survivor, Plans 50 State Race - Laguna Beach, CA Patch

LAGUNA BEACH, CA — Runner Sharael Kolberg is used to set her bar high. Having survived breast cancer, she wanted to do something big to commemorate her survival, and her 50th birthday to boot.

An avid runner and travel writer, planning a run through all 50 states seemed like a natural fit.

"I was a runner before I got cancer, and I thought it would be a great excuse to get back into running," she tells Patch.

Her plan? To run one-mile run in each of the 50 states, partnering with the Susan G. Komen foundation on her journey. Then, during her planning and mapping out phase, the coronavirus pandemic struck the globe.

Traveling was "off the table," she says.

"I came up with the idea to partner with one runner in each state, to do a run together, virtually, via Zoom," she says. The event will start Aug 11, and end on Sept 29, 50 days later.

"I'm going to run virtually with one person from each state, running at the same time," she explains.

As of this report, she will run California's Laguna Beach on Aug 11, followed by Hawaii with Suzanne Yen on Aug 12, North Carolina with Dayna Murray on Aug 13, Virginia with Shandi Treloar on Aug 14, Illinois with Berkley Cameron, and Idaho with John Eliopulos on Aug 15, West Virginia with Carol Stryker on Aug 23, and Oregon with Sandy Dinsdale on Sept 16.

Many dates and states are still available for entry, she says.

While Kolberg begins the race running one mile in Laguna Beach on the day of her 50th Birthday (Aug 11, 2020), she hopes to find at least one runner in every other state to do the same.

"In a way, pivoting my plan has some upsides," she tells us. She'll get to "virtually" meet someone from every state. She will also get to "visit" each state through their Zoom televised runs, and a glimpse "where they enjoy running."

Likewise, her virtual running partners can view a slice of Laguna Beach, where Kolberg calls home.

If you would like to join her in the endeavor, signups are happening now on www.50fortheCure.org.

The 50-state run will be broadcast across Zoom.

A calendar of when and where she and her partners run will be broadcast live will be posted on her website.

"I'd love to get as many people as possible to sign up to join me virtually to support my cause to help spread breast cancer awareness," says Kolberg. "I want to give breast cancer patients the hope that they can be in my shoes someday soon – out running again!"
