SPRINGFIELD — Spring- field Clinic has launched a new service aimed at reduc- ing some patients’ wait time for answers about their new breast cancer diagnosis and laying out a clear communi- cation map for their personal journey.
Springfield Clinic’s Breast Cancer Center is a team of dedicated physicians and staff who will be with a pa- tient with a new diagnosis ev- ery step of their journey. The specialists with the Breast Cancer Center understand that a cancer diagnosis is a frightening, confusing, life- changing event, not only for patients but for their loved ones. A new cancer diagno- sis also begins a journey of many steps, and the Breast Cancer Center team is there
to quickly and thoroughly provide a map for a patient’s care.
“We are on your side, says breast surgical oncologist Tam Mai, MD, FACS, “We are part of your team. We are here to make your jour- ney as smooth as possible; we will do everything we can to ensure that’s the case. Ev- eryone is as invested in this process as much as you are.”
A Team Approach
The multidisciplinary care approach is specifically de- signed for patients’ conve- nience and expediency of treatment. A team of experi- enced physicians from mul- tiple specialties will collabo- rate on a care plan specific to each patient’s unique needs.
New with the Breast Can- cer Center is a same-day
clinic which offers some pa- tients the opportunity to meet with every member of the multidisciplinary team in a single day instead of over several appointments, days and locations. This is where patients can get answers to their questions and feel con- fident in the established path forward.
Specialists seen during the same-day clinic may include:
– Medical oncologist
– Breast surgical oncologist – Radiation oncologist
– Plastic surgeon
– Genetics specialist
– Dietitian
Additionally, services that are housed at our Cancer Center include a state-of- the-art infusion center, an on-site pharmacy, fellow- ship-trained mammogra-
phers, physical therapists and occupational therapists. Patients will also meet with a nurse navigator whose only job is to manage the many pieces of their personalized care plan. The ultimate goal is to empower patients in the process so they can focus on healing and understand their care at every step.
The aforementioned group of specialists makes up a multidisciplinary tumor board that convenes to dis- cuss every patient who is receiving care through the Breast Cancer Center. This specialized group of physi- cians finalizes treatment plans following the most up- to-date National Comprehen- sive Cancer Network guide- lines.
