  • HGTV star Hilary Farr just revealed that she battled breast cancer in 2015.
  • “Fear of breast cancer stops a lot of women from getting checked,” the Love It or List It host said this week. “But as terrifying as it is, you face it.”
  • Farr, 70, is now in remission and is urging other women to take their health seriously.

HGTV host Hilary Farr is opening up about her harrowing experience with breast cancer for the first time. In a new interview with People, the Love It or List It star detailed her secret cancer battle, which she’s kept hidden from the public for nearly a decade, even while filming her popular show.

Her journey began in 2012, after Farr, 70, underwent a routine mammogram and doctors found a concerning lump. After surgery and lab testing revealed that the lump was precancerous, “I felt so much relief,” she said. “I moved on.”

But in 2014, when Farr was in Raleigh filming Love It or List It, a second mammogram revealed invasive breast cancer, which is cancer that spreads into surrounding breast tissue, per the American Cancer Society (ACS). She received a second lumpectomy (a procedure that consists of surgery to remove cancer or other abnormal cells of the breast), which seemed to have positive results at first. “I was signed off by the medical oncologist saying, ‘You’re done. You’re fine. Off you go,’” Farr recalled.

That wasn’t the case; the designer learned two months later that she had been given incorrect information and that she required radiation to make sure the cancer wouldn’t return. “I was terrified, because I knew I had a very small window,” Farr said. “I felt absolute fury that someone could be so flippantly wrong ... I could have been dead.” (She filed a complaint and the oncologist retired the following year, she revealed.)

Farr began a 28-day course of radiation therapy in March 2015. Radiation is one of the most common cancer treatments, the ACS says; it disrupts the growth process of cancer, causing it to stop growing and killing off any cancerous cells that could grow into tumors. The therapy is often used to lower the chance of recurrence in women who receive lumpectomies, also known as breast-conserving surgery.

”As terrifying as it is, you face it.”

However, Farr’s journey wasn’t quite done: Seven months later, doctors found yet another concerning growth in her breasts, but a third lumpectomy revealed the tumor to be precancerous. The Tough Love With Hilary Farr host is now in remission.

“Fear of breast cancer stops a lot of women from getting checked. But as terrifying as it is, you face it,” Farr told People. “Thinking that you should keep it a secret or just power through doesn’t help and it doesn’t heal ... If I can change that for one person, then that’s enough.”
