Avon Lake, Ohio

The Avon Lake Public Library (ALPL) is supporting one of its own, as well as other breast cancer survivors with an important project initiative.

“Knockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” Avon Lake

The Avon Lake Public Library is kicking off the “Knockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” project from 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 13 at the library, 32649 Electric Blvd., to help women recovering from breast cancer surgery.

The library is kicking off the “Knockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” project from 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 13 at the library, 32649 Electric Blvd., to help women recovering from breast cancer surgery.

The project connects volunteer knitters to help create comfortable breast prosthetics for breast cancer survivors.  The finished pairs will then be given away free to women who want or need them in the area.

“Knitted Knockers are special handmade breast prostheses for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast,” said Barbara Demorest, founder of Knitted Knockers in a press release. “Traditional breast prosthetics are usually expensive, heavy, sweaty and uncomfortable. Knitted Knockers on the other hand are soft, comfortable, beautiful and when placed in a regular bra they take the shape and feel of a real breast.”

According to information submitted by library officials, the Knitted Knockers project consists of 250 Knitted Knockers project kits that will be available at the library for volunteers to sign out. Each kit includes supplies needed to complete one pair of Knitted Knockers. After a pair is completed and returned for stuffing and processing, volunteers will pack finished sets up for distribution to those in need.

A Friends of ALPL board member learned of the project after she underwent double mastectomy surgery a few years ago. Knowing the ALPL already had a Stitch Niche program that meets monthly for those interested in knitting and crocheting, the board member introduced the Knockers program to the class. Once ALPL staff heard about the project, they began seeking funding opportunities to purchase additional supplies to assemble Knitted Knocker kits. Thanks to the Friends of ALPL, as well as money from the Community Foundation of Lorain County Lakeland Mini Grant Fund, 250 kits are now available. The Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute also donated informational materials for the public to raise awareness regarding early breast cancer detection and breast cancer.

“It has been shared by countless recipients of Knitted Knockers, including our own Friends member, that receiving a pair of Knockers to wear made them feel ‘normal’ again, improved their self-esteem, and made them comfortable in their clothes again,” said Shea Alltmont, ALPL  communications manager in an email. “Also, for so many who can’t afford typically expensive prosthetics, getting a pair of Knockers is a real gift. And that’s just the upside for those that receive these.”

As a ‘thank you’ for supporting the project by knitting or assisting in the effort to raise awareness, volunteers will also receive an ALPL Knitted Knocker Project shirt. If you don’t knit or crochet, there are still opportunities to support the project.

“From putting the kits together, to actually knitting, to preparing completed pairs for distribution, we need volunteers to help us put together all of the moving pieces and details,” said Alltmont. “This is a project with purpose. To make a difference in the lives of women all over northeast Ohio and beyond. But we need many hands to complete the task of our goal of 250-plus Knitted Knockers. We’re so excited for the enthusiasm to get knitting before we’ve even officially kicked off our Knitted Knockers Project.”

To sign up to help, go to  alpl.org/knittedknockers. The same website will also have a sign up to request a pair of Knitted Knockers for yourself or someone else.
