A photo of horizontally sliced bread loaves has sparked a viral response on Reddit since the image was uploaded onto the popular message board.
The viral post, uploaded to the popular r/mildlyinteresting board on December 28, showed several packaged loaves being sold at a supermarket.
As of Thursday afternoon, the post had been upvoted more than 81,400 times and garnered some 3,560 comments.
The post was shared by user u/minecalos1, with the caption: "The supermarket I work at sells horizontally sliced bread."
Each loaf wrapping said "pain tranche sur le long" alongside its English translation "horizontally sliced bread."
It did not take long for other Reddit users to race to the comments section and share their views on the unusually cut bread loaves.
One user appeared to have an explanation and said: "Not saying they are used here exclusively, but the bread in the pictures is from Quebec."
The commenter later continued: "Also, I think it comes from more rural areas so not everyone knows about it."
Another user had a slightly morbid use for the bread and added: "It's good when you have to make funeral sandwiches or sandwiches for a party."
A third commenter joked about the unusual horizontal cut and said: "Best idea since vertically sliced bread."
Other commenters from Brazil, Finland and Sweden, to name a few, said they also used horizontally sliced bread for open sandwiches and other dishes.
Despite being a common food staple, bread has somehow managed to ignite fierce debate on social media.
Earlier this year, a woman's bread-related antics ended up being viewed more than 1.1 million times on the social media platform TikTok.
The video, uploaded by @shawnleighman, recorded a woman in a supermarket as she picked up loaves of bread, slid them out of their packaging and put them back after she had touched them.
As she walked away another woman, who had filmed the video, stopped her and demanded to know what she would do next.
She said: "Are you going to buy the rest of them that you touched? You touched the whole thing. You touched all of them. You pulled them out of the bag, are you going to buy them all?"
"I'm sorry," said the woman who had been holding the bread before she walked away from the person recording the video.
Commenters were disturbed by what they had just seen with several vowing never to again buy the type of bread seen in the video.
