BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - Breast cancer is responsible for more than 40,000 deaths in the United States each year, but aggressive new treatments have pushed the disease’s five-year survival rate to nearly 90 percent.
All month long, KBTX has been sharing survival stories of breast cancer patients.
Kathy Lewis likes to spend her free time sitting on her back porch with her husband. But just last year, everything changed.
“I was getting dressed, I just happened to run my arm across the top of my breast and felt a lump,” Lewis said.
Just a few months after a clear mammogram, she knew something wasn’t right.
“Of course I put it off because I didn’t want to think that’s what it was,” Lewis said.
Doctors diagnosed Lewis with grade three invasive ductal carcinoma. It had spread to one lymph node under her arm.
“I went right in at the first of February and got my port in and got started within the next couple of weeks so for the last nine months, that’s what I’ve been doing.”
Lewis immediately started radiation and an immunotherapy drug, an aggressive treatment she says left her feeling her worst.
“I just knew God was holding my hand through it and lots of prayers from everybody,” Lewis said.
Even through her chemotherapy treatments and losing her hair, Kathy has leaned on her faith and her family.
“They call it the red devil because it’s the bag of the red medicine, but we called it the blood of Jesus instead of the red devil,” said Lewis.
Doctors say they caught the cancer early and Kathy says being able to ring that bell after her treatments was freeing.
“As far as I know, I’m cancer free and ready to go again,” Lewis said.
Kathy finished up her last treatment in September. She hopes this serves as a message to other women to get checked, especially if something feels off.
