Great British Bake Off contestant Kim-Joy has enjoyed a successful career as a cookbook author, but she's pivoting in an unexpected direction for her latest release. Kim-Joy is teaming up with artist Alti Firmansyah (Star-Lord & Kitty Pryde) for a new comic book called Turtle Bread: A Graphic Novel About Baking, Fitting In, and the Power of Friendship.
Turtle Bread is part cookbook and part graphic novel memoir about Kim-Joy's struggles with mental health. The creative team also includes letterer Joamette Gil, designer Cindy Leong, and editors Felix Horne and Allison O’Toole. With the book live now on Comixology, IGN can debut an exclusive preview of Turtle Bread in the slideshow gallery below:
Great British Bake Off fans may recall that Kim-Joy was a finalist in the 2018 season, and later went on to win the Bake Off's New Year 2022 special. Turtle Bread marks her first comic book work, as well as Firmansyah's first full-length graphic novel.
“Turtle Bread is a book about self-awareness,” said Kim-Joy in Comixology's press release. “It’s about that feeling of loneliness, of not fitting in or feeling good enough, of self-criticism, and the path towards self-acceptance. This is explored through baking, and in particular, the symbolism of the turtle–coming out of its shell and moving forward; however slowly that may be. Hence: Turtle Bread! (And yes, there’s actual turtle themed bread! Plus loads of other recipes). It’s NOT a magical story about how baking and friendship fix everything, but a story about the small steps forward (and sometimes sideways and backwards) gradually adding up."
Kim-Joy continued, "I’m in absolute awe of Alti’s artwork in the book–it is so expressive and emotive; you can really feel a connection to the characters on each page. As soon as I was introduced, I instantly loved Alti and her work.”
Turtle Bread is aprt of the Comixology Originals library, which means it's free to read for subscribers of Comixology Unlimited and Kindle Unlimited. The book is also available for individual purchase. Dark Horse Comics will also release a print version of Turtle Bread in October 2023.
In other comic book news, Batman's Greg Capullo is drawing Judge Dredd for the first time, and Marvel revealed a new wave of vintage-inspired Return of the Jedi variant covers.
