Hospitals are now employing blind women to do tactile exams that can detect lumps as small as half a centimetre
Mamtha still remembers that March morning in 2019 when a blind woman examined her breasts centimetre by centimetre using her heightened sense of touch and alerted doctors to an aberration.
Follow-up mammography confirmed stage-2 cancer. Four years on, Mamtha is thankful to the Medical Tactile Examiner (MTE) whose 45-minute thorough tactile exam helped the 49-year-old human resource professional get timely medical treatment.
