Breast cancer runs, walks and parades are happening across the country. On Sunday, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event took place in Washington Park, where many survivors, fighters and caregivers gathered.
The event was full of people supporting, embracing and loving one another. According to the World Cancer Research Fund, breast cancer has overtaken lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer.
Marilyn Fuller, a breast cancer survivor, was in attendance to educate and bring awareness to her daughters.
"I have three daughters, and my youngest was 11 when I was diagnosed,” she said. “So I am here so they do not hear the words "you have breast cancer."
A survivor who was pregnant when she battled cancer offered the following encouragement to other cancer survivors.
“Never give up,” Kristy Scalise said. “Live your life. Don’t give up. Follow your doctors and follow their advice. And keep fighting.”
A breast cancer screening every two years is recommended by the United States Preventive Services Task Force for women 50 to 74 years old. Women between the ages of 40 and 49 should consult their doctor or other health care provider about when and how often to get screened.
