The 2021 Susan G. Komen Upstate New York More Than Pink Virtual Walk will take place Saturday, Oct. 2.

Registration is open at Komen.org/upstatenywalk.

All events will once again be held virtually this year, allowing anyone, anywhere to register
for free and walk on Saturday, Oct. 2.

“We are excited to bring together anyone who has been impacted by breast cancer so that they can walk together in support of our mission to end breast cancer,” said Elizabeth Webster, development manager for Komen Upstate New York.

“We are still in a time where we must prioritize the health and safety of our participants, so we will be providing virtual activities during the week leading up to the More Than Pink walk, and limited in-person events where it is safe to do so,” the development manager added.

While the More Than Pink walk may be virtual, Komen is still a community made up of passionate and committed supporters — survivors, thrivers, co-survivors, family and friends.

As an organization dedicated to saving lives, it is important to protect the health of all participants, many of whom are breast cancer survivors or are currently in treatment for the disease, said Webster.

This year a special emphasis will be on company teams participating in the walk.

“With many workplaces operating remotely or in a hybrid model, employees welcome coming together for a meaningful cause,” Webster said.
“Since one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, almost everyone knows someone touched by this disease,” she said.

“We anticipate great corporate and community support, coming together for this common goal to raise critical funds for research and care for survivors,” Webster added.

The following resources are available for all More Than Pink walk events:

• Free registration at Komen.org/upstatenywalk

• Access to the More Than Pink walk app with updated features.

• Virtual event day experience for all participants.

• Fund-raising recognition awards.

• Participants who raise a minimum of $100 will receive a commemorative event T-shirt, according to organizers.

The leading risk factor for breast cancer is just being a woman. Although breast cancer does occur in men — about 2,150 are diagnosed annually — the disease is more than 100 times more common in women.

According to researchers, approximately 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer.

Most incidents of breast cancer — approximately 85%, occurs in women who have no family history of breast cancer.

Another main risk factor for women getting breast cancer: Just getting older; 79% of new cases and 88% of deaths occurred in women age 50 and older, the American Cancer Society said.
