Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, is always in the public eye. She’s active on Twitter and even more active in Sacramento where she has been a dynamo since taking office in 2013, with a long legislative track record. The Assembly Appropriations Committee chair has been so influential and inspiring that one of the candidates trying to unseat Gov. Gavin Newsom in the recall election called her “the most powerful politician in the legislative branch” last week in a televised debate.
Saturday morning, she went public on Twitter and Facebook with the news, as she wrote, “that no woman wants to hear, ‘You have breast cancer.’”
Gonzalez’s cancer is stage 0, aggressive and hormone positive, and since her mother had breast cancer at 44 and died at 62, Gonzalez and her family will pursue aggressive treatment. She says she’ll return to the legislative session to serve constituents until she is scheduled for surgery, and wrote “early screening mammograms work!” “Get yours, please,” she urged. This is the definition of public service — service before self. Godspeed to her.
