Lilly King was on form in the 100 breast last night, clocking a 1:05.32 to establish the fastest time in the world this year. The swim came on the heels of King posting the #2 200 breast in the world on Friday. King’s 1:05.32 is faster than her top times from 2020 (1:05.74) and 2018 (1:05.36), but was about a second off her lifetime best of 1:04.13.
King’s Indiana Swim Club teammate, Annie Lazor, came in 2nd with a 1:06.86, marking her top time of the year. The swim also makes her the #9 performer in the world this year. Lazor burst onto the world scene in the breaststroke events back in 2019, after joining the IU pro group. She led the world in the 200 breast for a time during the 2019 season (2:20.77), and dropped nearly 2 seconds in the 100 breast, swimming a 1:06.03, which still stands as her lifetime best. Lazor’s top time of 2020 was 1:06.54.
In the men’s 100 breast, 18-year-old Josh Matheny faced off against Indiana pro Cody Miller again, this time tying the 2016 Bronze medalist in the event. Matheny and Miller both finished in 1:00.31. The swims mark both swimmers’ top times of the year, and both of their first times under 1:01 this year.
Michigan post-grad Miles Smachlo completed his sweep of the men’s fly events, taking the men’s 200 fly with a 1:59.45, touching as the only swimmer in the field under 2:00. The swim wasn’t Smachlo’s top time this year, as he’s been 1:59.10. Smachlo has a lifetime best of 1:55.94, which he swam in 2019.
Club Wolverine 16-year-old Hannah Bellard took the women’s 200 fly, posting a 2:13.91. The swim wasn’t a best time, as Bellard has been 2:12.50 in 2018, when she was 14, but it was well under her 2020 top time of 2:16.37. OLY’s Lucy Malys, 17, picked up an Olympic Trials cut in the event, clocking a 2:14.46. The swim marked a nearly 2-second drop for Malys.
Malys had previously won the women’s 400 free earlier in the session, posting a 4:16.22. That marked yet another Olympic Trials cut for the 17-year-old. Malys had a previous best of 4:21.42, which she swam in 2019.
Will Modglin, a 16-year-old from Zionsville Swim Club, won the men’s 100 back decisively, posting a 55.04. The swim marked a giant drop for Modglin, who entered the meet with a lfietime best of 56.42. Modglin already had the Olympic Trials Wave I cut in the event, and with his swim last night, he has now picked up the Wave II cut.
There were a few Olympic Trials cuts picked up in the women’s 100 back. 16-year-old Berit Berglund from Carmel Swim Club won the event with a 1:01.20, establishing a new lifetime best by just under a second. Berglund already had the Wave I cut in the event, and picked up the Wave II cut with the swim. Josephine Ramey, who had a massive swim in the 200 back earlier in the meet, finished 2nd in 1:01.54, dropping from her personal best of 1:03.09. Ramey, who represents Fishers Area Swimming Tigers, went from not having the Wave I cut in the event, to earning the Wave II cut all in one swim. 3rd place was Madelyn Christman swam a 1:01.89, which was a personal best by 0.43 seconds. She already had the Wave I cut, and finished just off the Wave II standard. Anna Peplowski, an 18-year-old from WAVES Bloomington/Normal, swam a 1:02.64 for 4th place. Peplowski, who earned her first Trials cut in the 200 free on Friday, picked up another Wave I cut with the swim, touching just under the standard of 1:02.69.
