A new clinic offered by Banner Health can help ease the anxiety when it comes to finding a lump in your breast or receiving an abnormal mammogram.
The Undiagnosed Breast Cancer Clinic, UBCC, at Northern Colorado Medical Center, 1801 16th St., offers patients quick access to a team of experts that can perform the necessary tests to help diagnose a patient’s concern, with results often provided the same day.
“Same-day testing offers a tremendous amount of peace of mind to our patients. We should be able to provide coordinated and integrated care to put patients’ minds at ease and diagnose quickly,” Molly Decker, a breast surgeon with the clinic said. “Everything we do is about supporting the patient, that’s the whole idea of UBCC.”
The clinic’s multidisciplinary team consists of breast radiologists, physicians, breast surgeons, advanced practice providers, genetic counselors and oncology nursing staff.
When visiting the clinic, a patient first meets with a clinic physician to determine what tests need to be performed, such as a diagnostic mammogram or ultrasound.
“We have spots reserved over at the breast imaging center at Summit View where patients can come in and get same-day imaging,” said Kelsey Shay, a breast surgeon with Banner Health. “They are getting their complete treatment faster; their workup is expedited.”
If a something abnormal appears in a patient’s mammogram or ultrasound, the team may recommend the patient undergo a biopsy, or the surgical extraction of tissue or sample cells from an area of concern.
“A breast biopsy can take as little as 15-minutes,” Christopher Reed, a radiologist explained. “If the biopsy is done in the morning, we usually get the results bat that afternoon. Then I’ll discuss options with the patient.”
Patients diagnosed with breast cancer can quickly be referred to Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Comprehensive Breast Program for treatment.
The clinic keeps in contact with patients’ primary care providers to ensure that all providers are on the same page when it comes to treatment plans and options.
“Even if the patient is self-referred, I want to keep the primary care provider in the mix,” Decker said. “We all are integrated in the care for the patient. And that’s what important — the patient.”
Clinics similar to Banner’s Undiagnosed Breast Cancer Clinics were started by medical centers in Arizona, Shay said. With the clinic seeing numerous positive successes, the idea has spread to other medical facilities in different states.
“We saw success in Arizona and decided to try it here,” Shay said. “It’s been a really valuable service to check things out quickly and really get them (the patient) started in treatment.”
The Undiagnosed Breast Cancer Clinic is also available at the Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center at McKee Medical Center, 2000 N. Boise Ave., Loveland.
