Matzo bread

I went to Von’s several weeks ago, when I was still able to get out and walk around. I was looking for something in particular — it was Matzo bread. I found it in the specialty aisle, along with other Jewish foods.

In the Bible, Matzo bread is called “unleavened bread.” There were specific instructions that were to be followed by the person preparing the unleavened bread for the Passover season. Because yeast is a naturally occurring microscopic particle that floats around in the air around us, the person preparing the unleavened bread had so many minutes to add, water, flour, and salt to create the dough for the “bread,” — to me the unleavened bread is more of a cracker than a bread.

God was very specific about thoroughly cleaning the house to make sure that there was no leaven in the whole house. So, after the dough was made, it was quickly rolled out and using something like a fork, holes were made in lines up and down the dough, making sure that there would be no “rising” in the dough as it baked. The dough was transferred to the baking dish and baked until it was brittle and browned. It was then taken out of the oven and allowed to cool. This is what Jesus took, during the last Passover meal He shared with His disciples or what we call “the Lord’s Supper.” He then broke the bread, telling His disciples that it represented His body which was broken for them (and us).

If you look at the Matzo bread you can see that the punctures create straight lines in the bread. It reminds me of what Isaiah said in chapter 53:5, “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.” The straight puncture lines look like stripes on the bread.

The first Passover had happened 2,000 years prior to Jesus coming — for those 2,000 years the Jews did not know how beautifully God had put His plan of salvation in their prepared meal. And the bread is only one component of that beautiful picture that is seen in the Passover meal.

Listen to this other tradition that is practiced during the Passover meal. There is a beautiful “pouch” or envelope made of fabric. It has three compartments. Into each compartment, the father places a sheet of the unleavened bread (the Matzo). During the meal, the father takes the pouch, reaching in, he removes the “center” piece of the unleavened bread. He proceeds to wrap it in a white linen napkin, then he leaves the table, and hides the bread somewhere. At the end of the meal the youngest son is told to go find the hidden bread. When the little boy finds the bread, he begins shouting in Hebrew, “Resurrection! Resurrection!” Because he has found the prize!

Remember the pouch had three compartments? The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are pictured here. The dad removed the center piece of bread (the Son) wrapped it in a white linen napkin (just like Joseph of Arimathea did to Jesus after the crucifixion) then the dad “hid” the bread, or he “buried” it. Can you see the picture? God is so perfect in all that He does. I hope learning this is a blessing to you, knowing that God reveals Himself to us in so many ways that we will not be able to find them all. He is so GREAT, and MARVELOUS are His ways!
