The classic ichigo sando, a sandwich filled with strawberries and whipped cream or custard, is a winter staple and you’ll find it at convenience stores across Japan. This year, Lawson has stepped up its game by releasing a new take on the ubiquitous treat: the strawberries and cream are now sandwiched in a bread made with matcha from Uji in Kyoto prefecture, one of Japan’s most renowned green tea producing regions.
The aromatic yet slightly bitter Uji matcha is a perfect foil for the sweetness from the whipped cream, condensed milk and fresh strawberries. This updated strawberry sandwich is now available for ¥368 at Lawson stores across Japan (except Okinawa).
Not a big fan of matcha? Don’t worry; Lawson's standard strawberry custard sandwich (¥348) is still available.
