Local Eats: Angelo’s still serves homemade bread after 60-plus years in Ann Arbor - MLive.com

ANN ARBOR, MI -- Whether you’re craving breakfast or lunch, Angelo’s has you covered with its homemade bread.

Owner Stephen Vangelatos took over the restaurant after his parents retired in the 1980s. It opened in 1956 as a spot known for its in-house loaves of bread, including raisin, white and whole wheat.

“We spent a lot of time down here if we wanted to see our parents, then I stared working here,” Vangelatos said.

One of the customer favorites is Angelo’s French toast on white or raisin bread, or the deep-fried French toast covered with strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream on raisin bread.

Vangelatos recommends the eggs benedict or the homemade corned beef hash with raisin toast. During the fall, Angelo’s also makes pumpkin pancakes.

Much of the lunch menu includes “diner food.” Vangelatos recommends customers try any of the burgers or sandwiches made with homemade bread.

“That’s what we’re known for...we’ve been doing it for 60 some years. Dad baked all the bread,” Vangelatos said, who makes it himself now.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Vangelatos would make as many as 200 loaves of bread a day. Now, he averages 75 to 100 on weekends.

The restaurant also runs “Angelo’s On the Side” in the next door unit, serving coffee, cappuccino, baked goods and carryout orders. Prior to the pandemic, Angelo’s picked up partnerships with Uber Eats, GrubHub and DoorDash to help keep business running.

“It’s hard to say what happens when the students leave,” Vangelatos said. “Once outdoor seating goes, once the weather gets colder, I don’t know what to expect.”

Angelo’s is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday and until 2 p.m. on Sunday at 1100 Catherine St. in Ann Arbor. Call 734-761-8996. More information can be found at https://www.angelosa2.com/.
