If you want top dollar for your home, sometimes you have to go to the extra mile.

At a minimum, you have to have your house staged to the nines. You have to have your home professionally photographed. You need a video tour, a drone video and a self-guided 3-D tour.

But to get to the next level, why not appeal to all the senses — and most importantly, the sense of smell.

Baking cookies during home showings is the traditional route. But here’s another approach that’s become popular during the pandemic: Bake some sourdough bread.

The dough gives off an almost hypnotic aroma as it is rising, which can take 12 to 24 hours depending on which recipe you are following. Then, there is the baking process. You can almost see the scent coming through the oven vents.

If you’re up for giving it a shot, here’s what you need to do.

Since it is ill-advised to attend a bread baking class or invite an expert over to your house to teach you, find a video tutorial showing the whole process from starter to finish.

Yes, to make sourdough bread, you need a starter. You can make a starter from scratch, but it is faster to ask a friend to gift you their starter. I picked mine up, contact free, from a friend’s front porch.

Hat tip to Ben Starr and his video “Simple Sourdough for Lazy People,” in which he gives simple instructions for everyday people who have no experience with bread baking.

You may need to pick up a few reasonably priced kitchen items, some flour and non-iodized salt.

Give it a shot. The worst thing that can happen is that you make your house smell wonderful, and produce a bread product that might be suitable for croutons or bird food.

The best thing that might happen is that you make your house smell wonderful, you discover you can actually turn out a spectacular loaf of bread, and you get an offer that night.
