In the midst of the difficult times brought by the pandemic, there are individuals, businesses, groups and organizations that have generated a positive impact on society.

This is how Grupo Bimbo (Mexico) became the official Guinness World Records title holder for the largest donation of baked goods, donating a total of 24,480 kilograms of bread to a food bank in Mexico on October 22, 2020.

Grupo Bimbo established the race five years ago. They were inspired by the idea of creating a "Global Energy Race" that consists of encouraging healthy lifestyles while helping sectors and communities in need

With this race, people around the world have had the access and opportunity to actively contribute to a charitable cause while playing sports and taking care of their health.

This year's Global Energy Race 2020 was organized in a different way, adapting to the new challenges and realities caused by the effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Because of this, Bimbo called for the participation of thousands of people in a virtual race that brought together more than 300,000 participants from over 127 countries, resulting in a total donation of more than 6,000,000 slices of bread worldwide.

Those who registered were active on social media and uploaded photos of the race using the hashtags #GER2020 and #RunWithUs. This year, the participation in the sports event was free of charge.

Competitors could select the distance to run through four different modalities: 1, 3, 5 or 10 kilometers, this journey had to be completed during the dates of October 5th to 11th. The company was responsible for donating 20 slices of bread for each person registered, regardless of the kilometers they had run.

Mexico was the country with the most people participating with a total of more than 67,000 runners, which meant a donation of 24,480 kilos of sliced bread to a food bank in the country.

This demonstrated that every effort, every movement and every step contributed to a great cause.

Surprisingly, this year the virtual edition of the Global Energy Race 2020 had an increase in attendance and donations compared to last year. This number surpassed all expectations and left a new challenge for those who wish to break this record in the near future.

"We are very happy with the commitment of more than 300,000 runners who joined this cause, with their participation we managed to support those who need it most. With you running, we donated," - Alberto Levy, Global Marketing Director of Grupo Bimbo

Guinness World Records made sure that the donations met all the guidelines and requirements previously established, including that independent witnesses corroborated the process.

The previous official Guinness World Record title holder was ViSalus who set the record title on September 25, 2012 with a total of 23,586 kilograms of donated baked goods to the Huntington Area Food Bank in Huntington, West Virginia.

Congratulations to Grupo Bimbo who are now Officially Amazing™!
