Harper’s Bread House — considered by many to be Chinatown’s best bakery — appears to have permanently closed. The restaurant appeared empty and devoid of furniture on a recent weekday, and one of the phone lines for the restaurant was disconnected.
Located at the corner of Grand and Forsyth streets, the decades-old bakery is known for its traditional Cantonese pastries like the egg tart, presented with real Hong Kong flair. While it offered the classic, pale yellow dan tat, it also provided the original Portuguese version of the egg tart, with a firmer and flakier crust and a wildly yellow custard. There was even a Brazilian version using coconut milk.
Then one day a couple of years ago, the specialty changed from custard pies to triangular Japanese rice balls, with a choice of a dozen or more types of ongiri per day, among a shifting roster of breads and pastries.
Eater critic Robert Sietsema was particularly fond of the restaurant’s ham and egg sandwich, and also recommended several desserts at the bakery in the past including the matcha sponge cake, and the taro waffle.
While New York City’s Chinatowns have been rocked by coronavirus-related closures just like everywhere else in the city, these neighborhoods has been particularly hard hit due in part to xenophobia, which has further affected businesses.
Since the start of the pandemic, more than a 1,000 NYC restaurants have permanently closed due to the downturn in business, with many citing failed rent negotiations as the reason for closure. It’s not yet clear if that prompted the closure of Harper’s as well, but Eater has reached out for more details.
