TAMPA — Is it the mayoral bet equivalent of a power play?
Jane Castor promised to send cigars, Cuban bread and craft beer to Dallas if the Stars beat the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup.
If the Bolts win, though, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson will send craft beer, candy apples and brisket. Texas brisket is not to be trifled with. But candy apples? And what Texas craft beer springs to mind? Quick!
“Stanley needs a Florida tan!” said Castor in a statement Monday. “We are so excited to cheer on the Tampa Bay Lightning as they continue their quest to bring the Stanley Cup home. Our team has trained hard, they’ve played hard, and they are ready to win this. I look forward to a little friendly competition with Mayor Johnson and an exciting Stanley Cup Final for fans in our great Cities. Go Bolts!”
Johnson’s take in the same city of Tampa release: "We are extremely proud of the Dallas Stars. Throughout the playoffs, our hockey team has embodied our city’s toughness, resilience, and resourcefulness. We are excited to cheer for these special players as they fight for the right to hoist the Stanley Cup — and I am absolutely thrilled to have the chance to hold bragging rights over my good friend, Mayor Castor.”
Mayoral bets and trash talk are the frothy spillover of playoff fever. Last year, Castor and St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman traded playful barbs with Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner when the Tampa Bay Rays played the Houston Astros in the playoffs.
Johnson, 44, was elected mayor of Dallas in 2019, the same year Castor won her office in Tampa.
The Stars hold a 1-0 series lead. The two teams square off again in the National Hockey League’s championship showcase Tuesday night.
