Although most people know keeping bread in a cool, dark place is usually best, that can be easier said than done when the temperature soars.

Even if you have a bread bin to keep your loaves out of direct light it might not be that useful if the air around it is too warm.

But that doesn't mean you need to ditch your bread bin altogether, it's only wooden and metal styles of bread bins that could be doing more hard than good.

Storing bread in ceramic or pottery containers will make it last longer, according to nutrition expert Birgit Brendel.

This is because they allow for air to flow easily, which help stop the bread from going mouldy as fast, Express.co.uk reported.

You might also be tempted to store bread in the fridge when the weather warms up, or even freeze it.

Although this can keep it fresh for longer, it might not be the best method if you want a soft, fresh taste, since it will ultimately comprise the flavour.

It's also important to take bread out of it's plastic bag to keep it fresh when it's hot outside, Birgit revealed.

The plastic covering the bread means moisture gets trapped inside and mould can develop - which isn't ideal.

So although the plastic bag do help keep bread fresh usually, when it's especailly hot outside it can have the opposite effect.

That said, paper bags aren't much better and can cause bread to dry out faster.

So what should you use instead?

The expert recommended food fans store their bread with the sliced side down to help keep it fresh during the hot summer months.
