adaapablogsi.blogspot.com

While most shoppers pick up their weekly loaves from the supermarket, a growing number of bakeries have been sprouting up across Connecticut dedicated to making fresh, hand-prepped breads. It’s a trend seen in similar markets like craft beer and produce as consumers seek out more authentic and local product.

Plus, it’s hard to beat a freshly baked loaf of sourdough, whether you’re slicing it for a sandwich, soaking up some pasta sauce, or toasting it for breakfast. Don’t forget the olive oil!

Not sure where to start looking? Here are five bakeries across Connecticut to swing by and celebrate Sourdough September.

The Flour Girl Bakery

14 Main St, Hebron

We’ve featured The Flour Girl Bakery on a past Quick Bites, where owner Michelle Nicholson shared how she got into baking through sourdough.

“Our sourdough breads and artisan breads are hand mixed, shaped, and baked,” she said. “We use a wild yeast sourdough starter, and it starts with high quality flour. We don’t used mixes or anything less.”

You’ll have a wide selection of loaves to choose from: Fall Bread with cinnamon, orange zest, honey and walnuts, a honey oat beer sourdough, a roasted garlic sourdough, and a classic sourdough. Don’t miss out on their other baked goods as well, like mini pumpkin coffee cakes, chocolate chip cookies, banana Nutella swirl muffins, and plenty more!

Bantam Bread

853 Bantam Rd, Bantam

Folks in Litchfield county looking for their sourdough fix can check out Bantam Bread. The location oozes with character complemented by the scents of freshly baked goods filling the air.

Sourdough lovers have a few options to choose from. There’s a sunflower and flax sourdough, an olive sourdough, and a classic sourdough. There’s a host of other breads to choose as well, like multi grain, bakers white/peasant, Irish soda bread on Thursdays, and Semolina Batard.

They’ve also got a mix of sweets like tea cakes, fruit crostatas and tarts, as well as local goods like honey, jams, and more. Take a trip through scenic Connecticut and enjoy!

Uncle Matt’s Bakery & Café

105 Church Hill Rd, Sandy Hook

If you’re looking for a casual, cozy atmosphere to have a coffee and pick up a loaf or two of sourdough, Uncle Matt’s has you covered.

Every day, you’ll find freshly baked sourdough and olive sourdough loaves for sale, along with ciabatta, rye, baguettes, and more. They also have breads that rotate through the week, like honey spelt on Mondays and cinnamon raisin on Wednesdays. With over a dozen different styles to choose from, you’ll have to plan a few trips.

Don’t miss out on their breakfast and lunch menu, either. Their thorough list of sandwiches are all made with their in-house bread!

Small State Provisions

637 New Park Ave, West Hartford

With a commitment to small batch bread baking by hand, you know the loaves at Small State Provisions are going to be delicious.

You’ve got a few ways to order: walk-in and pick out a loaf or two, pre-order online for pickup, or sign up for their 8-week subscription program with free delivery in West Hartford.

Taking inspiration from “traditional European sourdough cultures” and mixing them with new ideas, BROTworkshop has some of the most beautiful loaves you’ll ever lay eyes on.

Their standard offerings include an all-wheat French Country loaf, French Country with olives, Walnut Raisin, German Rye, Tourte de Seigle, German Pumpernickel, Multigrain sandwich bread, and 6 packs of woodfired Bavarian pretzels.
