Thriving Pink — a Yolo County nonprofit organization dedicated to helping those impacted by breast cancer — will be hosting a virtual breast cancer workshop presented by Dr. Alicia Silva in Spanish from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday aimed at the Latina population of Yolo County.
Silva is a general surgeon who has worked at Sutter Davis Hospital since 1999 with a particular interest in breast cancer surgery and serves on Thriving Pink’s board.
“In general breast cancer affects one out of eight women and that is certainly true for Yolo County,” Silva stressed. “Yolo County has the seventh-highest incidence rate of breast cancer in California.”
Silva added that even though Latinas don’t necessarily have a higher risk of breast cancer they tend to present at more advanced stages and with a potentially worse prognosis, which is why outreach to the Spanish-speaking community is so important.
“Latinas are 20% more likely to die from breast cancer than Caucasian women when matched with age and stage diagnosis,” she highlighted. “Yolo County is approximately 30% Hispanic so looking at our population and looking at the disparities based on language and ethnicity and impact on early detection and prognosis is what made us want to increase our outreach to Latinas and to the Spanish-speaking population in Yolo County.”
The workshop will include a presentation covering prevention and treatment options with a Q & A session at the end.
“I’ll be going over history, clinical trials, different surgical options and treatment options and some other resources and links that people can use,” Silva emphasized.
Additionally, she noted that while Thriving Pink has many other workshops every month — some medical-based and others on survivorship — the nonprofit is attempting to increase its outreach to the Latino community and hopes to have one in-person workshop within the next year and to create a peer group where women can come together and provide support for each other.
“I think that it’s very difficult to navigate the medical system for anyone but in particular if you don’t speak the language,” Silva added.
