New Yorkers show up for Mary O’s in the East Village

East Village pub Mary O’s has sold more than $1 million in Irish soda bread after owner Mary O’Halloran appeared in an Instagram post on Humans of New York. In the post, O’Halloran described her fight to keep the bar afloat this past year while caring for her six children, who were homeschooled from the bar and occasionally helped in the kitchen.

Humans of New York founder Brandon Stanton urged the account’s 11 million followers to patronize the pub in-person and support Mary O’s by ordering boxes of soda bread online. As of August 7, the restaurant had received more than 25,000 orders for the baked goods, which translates to over 150,000 scones and $1 million in sales, according to the post.

The decade-old Irish bar had reportedly been struggling to stay afloat for much of the past year. Throughout the pandemic, O’Halloran catered dinners for emergency workers and sold boxes of soda bread, but it wasn’t enough to make rent. “It felt like the walls were closing in,” she says, but regulars of the pub showed up through it all up, helping to run errands and set up the online shop that would later accept 25,000 orders in scones.
