Press release from Lenox Hill Hospital:
Jan. 18, 2021
Sharon Rosenbaum Smith, MD, a nationally renowned breast cancer surgeon, has been appointed associate chief of breast surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital. Dr. Rosenbaum Smith specializes in breast conservation surgery, skin and nipple sparing mastectomies, sentinel node biopsies, high risk patients and young women affected by breast cancer. Through her new post, she joins the Breast Cancer Center at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, which treats more New Yorkers for cancer than any other health care provider.
In her new role, Dr. Rosenbaum Smith will help expand and enhance the hospital's rapidly growing multidisciplinary breast cancer program. Her busy private breast surgery practice located in Columbus Circle, BreastlinkNY, has been integrated into Northwell's Cancer Institute and is now one of several convenient access points for breast cancer care throughout Manhattan. Other New York City locations include Lenox Hill Hospital, Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital, and Lenox Health Greenwich Village.
"We are excited to welcome Dr. Rosenbaum Smith, whose excellent surgical skills and compassionate bedside manner will complement our rapidly expanding breast care program," said Paul L. Baron, MD, chief of breast surgery and director of the breast cancer program at Lenox Hill Hospital. "Her philosophy of treating the entire patient, not just the disease, aligns perfectly with our commitment to make every effort to eradicate the cancer and leave the patient with the best possible cosmetic outcome."
Dr. Rosenbaum Smith comes to Lenox Hill from Mount Sinai Health System, where she has held various roles of progressive responsibility for the past two decades, including medical director of the hospital's breast clinic and program director of the breast surgery fellowship. In addition, for the past five years, she has served as assistant clinical professor of surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai West Hospital and prior to that, as assistant professor of surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
As a distinguished expert in her field, Dr. Rosenbaum Smith has co-published numerous papers on an array of breast cancer topics in peer-reviewed medical journals and has contributed to two book chapters, one on breast cancer screening and another on lymphatic mapping. She is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Clinical Oncology.
After obtaining her medical degree from the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education/New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY, Dr. Rosenbaum Smith went on to complete a general surgery residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where she served as chief resident. She subsequently pursued a fellowship in breast surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
Northwell Health takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating breast cancer at the dedicated Breast Cancer Center, which has achieved accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a consortium of national, professional organizations focused on breast health. The Center – with locations throughout Long Island, Manhattan and Westchester – treats a high volume of breast cancers and offers the most advanced, least-invasive treatments currently available.
"Our Cancer Institute has been steadily expanding its services within the last year to provide comprehensive, innovative cancer care in convenient locations throughout the New York metro area," said Richard Barakat, MD, MBA, physician-in-chief and director of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute. "By expanding our breast cancer program within Manhattan, we are able to bring seamless access to high-quality cancer services to even more patients."
