BUDDY CHECK 3: Legislation aims to make diagnostic tests for breast cancer more accessible and affordable - KYTV

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - For some people just one mammogram can confirm or rule out the presence of breast cancer.  But for others, who may have denser breast tissue it takes additional tests to determine a clear diagnosis.

What some women have discovered is, while their insurance policy is required to pay for the mammogram, there is no law requiring coverage for additional diagnostic testing.

Missouri U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt is trying to change that.

“You find out there might be a problem, but you don’t know what ind of problem, then you have a diagnostic test, logical follow up to screening only to find out the diagnostic test could cost you hundreds, maybe even 1000 or more dollars to find out what you initially went in for,” said Blunt.

Sen. Blunt is co-sponsoring the Access to Breast Cancer Diagnosis Act, that would require insurance companies to pay for those follow up tests.  He says he’s optimistic it will be approved.

If you or someone you know is having financial challenges while dealing with breast cancer, be sure to contact the Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks. Cox and Mercy hospitals in Springfield and BCFO are partners with us for Buddy Check 3.

Our Buddy Check 3 program is all about reminding you to remind your family or friends to practice regular self exams and other guidelines to detect breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages.
