Columbus bakery in Syracuse closes deli, but don’t worry, the bread isn’t going anywhere - syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. — Columbus Baking Company has closed its deli, but the iconic Syracuse bakery isn’t going anywhere.

Owner Jimmy Retzos said he decided to close the adjacent deli in March because he was having trouble finding dependable help. He opened the deli in 2009.

The coronavirus pandemic played a role in making the closure permanent, he said today.

Since 1895, Columbus’ bread and butter has been, well, bread. And that side of the business is not changing, Retzos said.

Along with the sandwich, point and flat loaves that the bakery is famous for, Columbus will continue to sell its meatballs by the dozen, as well as make-at-home pizza kits.

For 125 years, the bakery has been open daily, but no day compares to Christmas Eve. The busiest day of the year, Columbus sells around 6,000 loaves of bread on Dec. 24, about four to five times more than the average day.

Columbus Baking Company is at 502 Pearl St. and opens daily at 8 a.m.—except for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, when the bakery opens at 6 a.m. The line out the door those days starts even earlier.
