OREGON, Wis. — A retired Dane County Sheriff’s Deputy going above and beyond to honor the legacy of a loved one.
Jim Groenier makes artisan styled award winning turkey calls for hunters. But instead of taking a profit, the octogenarian has donated all the proceeds to Carbone Cancer Center for breast cancer research.
Groenier's wife Darlene died of the disease three years ago, and Jim believes Darlene (also an avid turkey caller creator) would like his effort.
"She'd appreciate it, yes," Groenier said as Carbone Cancer Center representatives said to date, the UW Health system has received $15,000 in contributions.
"The way [Darlene] got treated,I just can't say enough for them (Carbone Cancer Center)," he explained.
Medical oncologist Dr. Mark Burkard beyond grateful for the funding that supports his gene targeting drug research.
"If we can make [treatment] precise, especially with the chemo therapies, then we could guarantee that they will work for those people," Dr. Burkhard said about the experimental study.
Groenier also makes the "oven minnow," a wooden stick that looks like a minnow and pulls an oven rack in and out. The handcrafted devices have been sold not just across the country, but the world.
"From Australia to Paris, to Holland, Germany to Cuba, Mexico, to places in between," Groenier said.
Ultimately, the octogenarian just grateful he can do something small to support perhaps a breakthrough in what he knows can be an ugly and deadly illness.
"I just, I appreciate the people that have bough them and contributed the money to Carbone Cancer in my wife’s name and hopefully [doctors] come up with a cure for breast cancer," he said.
