CASPER, Wyo. — The Wyoming Breast Cancer Initiative (WBCI) received a record $198,000 in community grant requests in 2021, according to WBCI Board President Cara Nett.

The initiative announced Thursday that it is accepting applications for community grants for the 2022 funding cycle through Sept. 30, 2021. The Wyoming Breast Cancer Initiative has granted over $500,000 toward breast cancer projects and early detection vouchers since 2017.

“WBCI received $198,000 in 2021 funding requests, a record number of requests since we began,” Nett said. “For the upcoming 2022 funding cycle we anticipate funding requests will be even higher.”

Projects that have been funded over the years include, among other things:

  • Four breast boutiques across Wyoming
  • Individual and group mental health services
  • Early detection screenings and events
  • Survivor retreats
  • Vouchers for lodging and gas for those traveling for care

The WBCI has received a $15,000 grant from the Wyoming Community Foundation that will help fund some of the requests the initiative receives.

“Support from the Wyoming Community Foundation will be a vital part of our ability to help fund community grants this year,” Nett said. “We are so appreciative for the support from the Wyoming Community Foundation’s Rock Springs and Casper Local Boards, and the Foundation’s Statewide Board.”

The WBCI is a nonprofit that raises funds that it then grants to efforts in local Wyoming communities to “increase early detection of breast cancer, decrease late-stage diagnosis and support survivors in the fight for their lives.”

Over 100 community and voucher grants have been provided over the years, offering services to over 5,000 Wyoming residents. The WBCI adds that they have helped pay for 4,000 clinical breast exams, 700 screening mammograms, 251 diagnostic tests, 3,200 patient navigation services and 400 breast boutique services.

“The funds received from the Wyoming Community Foundation will continue to strengthen the good work being accomplished,” the WBCI said. “To learn more about the Wyoming Breast Cancer Initiative or [apply] for a Community Grant for the upcoming 2022 grant cycle, visit www.wyomingbreastcancer.org or contact Heather Ross at info@wyomingbreastcancer.org.”

“Grant applications will only be accepted through Sept. 30, 2021. If you or someone you know needs help paying for a screening or diagnostic mammogram, contact WBCI at info@wyomingbreastcancer.org or by calling 307-840-WBCI.”
