The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now home to one of the most unique speedruns the gaming community has seen yet: racing to see who can bake bread the fastest. Even for longtime veterans of the speedrunning scene, this is undoubtedly one of the more unique challenges the community has devised. Others include playing Super Mario Bros. blindfolded, clearing the Dark Souls series using a Guitar Hero controller, and beating Resident Evil 4 without running.
For many, the choice of game for this challenge may not be surprising; the Legend of Zelda series has long been a staple of the speedrunning community. The original game has been beaten in just under half an hour, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past has been cleared in under two minutes. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is also a frequent candidate for speedruns, given the game’s massive popularity, and throughout the years, dozens (if not hundreds) of glitches have been found that allow players to beat this relatively lengthy title in 7 and a half minutes. Of course, these are all “Any %” speedruns, meaning that glitches can be exploited and 100% completion isn’t required; beating Ocarina of Time with 100% completion still takes at least 3 a half hours for even the best speedrunners so far.
According to Polygon, the latest “bread%” speedruns involve baking bread in the game as quickly as possible. Despite how simple it sounds, the game’s random number generator (RNG) makes finding the ingredients to make bread mostly luck-based. Furthermore, the areas in which these ingredients are located are not easily accessible as soon as the game starts. This means that speedrunners must acquire the powers necessary to leave the Great Plateau area, cut down enough grass to get enough randomly-generated wheat, and of course not die in the process. So far, speedrunner Xeryph holds the record at 19:44:700.
As funny as it may seem, the RNG aspect of this challenge is what makes it viable. After all, until someone manages to find wheat on their first try and have it drop as close to their next objective as possible, the run can theoretically always be improved upon. This separates it from glitchless speedruns of games such as Super Mario Bros, in which there is technically a pixel-perfect run that cannot ever be bested. The appeal of games with random aspects has led to games such as Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night including randomizer modes in the official games themselves, allowing players to mix up various aspects of the game to ensure that no two playthroughs feel the same. One popular mod even merges and randomizes elements of the original Legend of Zelda and Super Metroid, making it so that players regularly move between games and can find necessary items for one game inside the other.
The bread% speedrun only has a handful of submissions on its leaderboard and will most likely not be a category at AGDQ anytime soon. However, it’s a great example of how a game like Breath of the Wild, which has already been universally praised for the freedom it provides the player, can be enjoyed in different ways.
