FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) - Michelle Chambers is a city councilwoman, a business owner, an advocate and a leader in the Fort Wayne community, and now she’s one step closer to surviving breast cancer.

Thursday, Chambers finished her last radiation treatment for stage two breast cancer. She says she got to ring the bell, a tradition for cancer patients, signifying the end of a long battle.

"Just ringing that bell, so much joy ringing that bell,” Chambers said. "I’m just happy to be here and that we caught it early.”

She was diagnosed about four months ago, and the doctors say she’s lucky they caught it early.

“I'm a wife, I'm an aunt, I'm a councilwoman, I'm running a business, I work, but I ignored the signals,” Chambers said."When I got the diagnosis, I just took a deep breath and said, okay, what’s next.”

Chambers says she has a history of breast cancer in her family. After she got the diagnosis, she began radiation treatments immediately going in five days a week followed by surgery.

"The radiation is the one, it makes you very fragile,” Chambers said. “There are days where I would be at work texting my girlfriends, please pray for me.”

This was all happening during a global pandemic, but she says she kept working and only missed one council meeting. She says she often felt isolated but people showed her she was not alone.

“The community letting me know they have been praying for me, it has touched my soul so deep that’s why I love Fort Wayne.”

Chambers says she wants other women with breast cancer to know it’s not easy but stay strong.

"Be kind and gracious to yourself, allow your community and friends to love on you and you are not alone, and you will survive.”

Chambers says she’s ready to get back to serving the community full time and leading the Mayor’s Commission on Police Reform and Justice. However, she says she will also work to bring awareness to breast cancer and hopefully inspire women to keep fighting.
