PANERA Bread has rolled out a smaller menu at some locations and customers are shocked by the shake-up.

The limited food and drink offerings are being served up at select Paneras nationwide as part of a test.

About 3 percent of all Panera locations in the US are testing the smaller menu, according to Los Angeles' KTLA.

The company declined to tell the news station which items were removed and what locations are involved.

Up to 50 items have reportedly been cut from the standard menu as part of the trial, according to a Reddit post.

Wolfygirl97 shared a photo of a list of offerings alongside the caption: "Menu items leaving."

The listed items included everything from the kid's menu, flatbread pizzas, sandwiches, salads, and desserts.

"PSA to everyone (since this is getting algorithm boosted for some reason): This is a limited menu test for some markets," one person wrote on the Reddit thread.

"Not every market is participating in the test."

A Panera spokesperson said that the company routinely tests different menu options at select locations "with the goal of providing a faster and more convenient guest experience while also simplifying operations for our associates."

"We routinely run these tests to identify new ways to better serve our guests, whether that’s through menu innovation, simplification, or new technology," the company said.

Many customers weren't excited about the change, even if it only affects a small percentage of locations.

"Wait wait wait what? Those are all the most popular things I feel like," wrote one Reddit user. "Is this for all corporate and franchise?"

"How can you take away sourdough," asked another person.

"Literally every place has it," said another.

A fourth person wrote: "What's the point in going anymore? Saying goodbye to my sip club!"

"This is only very limited test markets. The chances of it actually succeeding are very, very low," said a user who claimed to be an assistant general manager at a Panera.

"The menu reduction test has actually been pretty successful in my market. They are rolling out to more stores in my market," wrote one person.

Someone else offered another explanation, writing: "It's a 37 percent menu reduction test that Panera is running to simplify our operations.

"Most of these items are either high waste or very low usage. It's designed to simplify the new hire journey and to increase efficiency with less to memorize. This test is in phase 2 and not guaranteed to go live company wise."

Several other franchises have tested simplified menus at certain locations.

Chick-fil-A locations temporarily discontinued side salads from the menu but ended up reversing the decision due to customer backlash.

Taco Bell also removed items from its menus in order to make room for other items.
