A retired teacher in the North Syracuse Central School District is being called a man with a big heart.
Bill Brown of Cicero began making homemade raisin bread for people in his community last fall at a time when the pandemic kept people inside.
What You Need To Know
- Bill Brown of Cicero decided to make raisin bread for a few people he knew during the pandemic, but that nice gesture quickly grew
- With help from his wife, he started making a few raisin breads for people in his neighborhood and then his church
- Bill continues to make the raisin bread for people who could use a smile and he said he doesn't plan to stop anytime soon
Meanwhile, Brown, 74, is also into model trains. Bill has been collecting toy trains since he was kid. In fact, he loves showing his models to everyone he can.
“I think people need this kind of thing to distract them. No matter what’s going on in their lives. But, certainly during COVID, we had to have things to distract us,” Bill said.
Bill’s knowledge of trains isn’t the only thing this retired teacher has been sharing the last several months.
“A friend of mine passed away a little over a year ago. And I used to make bread or bring in things that we used to make to the nursing home, which is where he was,” he said.
Bill knew how much his friend used to enjoy that raisin bread. So he used it as inspiration to keep on baking. He decided to pull out his old bread maker last fall.
With help from his wife, he started making a few raisin breads for people in his neighborhood.
However, it didn’t stop there.
“What I would do is select people who were in the church who, I don’t know, seemed like they could use a loaf of raisin bread. So, when they went up to communion, I’d put it on their bench and then scoot around,” he said.
Bill said he loves the way the breads can cheer people up. He said other than getting the ingredients, it isn’t too difficult to make.
To date, he’s made and given away about 300 loaves.
“I’m going to continue to do it. Just because COVID may be gone or at least fading … I’m going to continue to do it,” he said.
It was a new hobby taken on because of the pandemic, but one that Bill said will stick as long as he can keep bringing others joy. He said making the breads also gave him something fun to do with his grandchildren.
He's hoping to purchase another bread machine because, after all, his current one has gotten a lot of use.
