Breast center calculates lifetime risk for all patients - Midland Reporter-Telegram

One size does not fit all when it comes to breast screening. At The Breast Center at Midland Health, our goal is to provide personalized care to all of our patients.  One way that this care is provided is by assessing each patient’s lifetime risk for developing breast cancer.  We have been doing this for several years using the Gail Risk Model.  The Gail Risk Model has been a good tool to help us identify women who are at an increased risk for breast cancer, however there are factors that the Gail Risk Model does not take into consideration.  Thus, it could possibly underestimate a patient’s lifetime risk.

The Tyrer-Cuzick model is a well-studied, widely available model for predicting breast cancer risk. This model includes the most comprehensive set of variables and is the most sensitive of all the models for detecting risk for breast cancer. The Tyrer-Cuzick model incorporates the presence of BRCA gene mutations, personal risk factors, and extensive family history.  Tyrer-Cuzick Risk Tool version 8 also takes into account breast density. The Tyrer-Cuzick Risk Tool has been around for many years with continuously updated versions.  In fact, a study was done that verified that the Tyrer-Cuzick has proven to be an accurate risk model for over 20 years.

One year ago, we started looking at every patient’s personal and family history, and if there were elements that would increase their risk, a Tyrer-Cuzick score was calculated manually in addition to their Gail Risk Score.

We are proud to announce that starting this month (July 2021) all patients that come through our center will have their lifetime risk assessed by the Tyrer-Cuzick Risk Model. The results of this calculation will appear on the patient’s results letter informing them if they are at average, intermediate or high risk.  The doctor’s report will contain the patient’s exact risk score and recommendations for additional screening if the patient is deemed at increased risk. The only patients that the Tyrer-Cuzick Risk Model is not able to calculate a risk score on are patients that 85 years of age or older and patients that have previously been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health lists breast cancer as the most common cancer diagnosed in 2020. Early detection of breast cancer assures the best outcomes for minimal treatment and the best chance for survival. Being able to identify women who are at an increased risk and recommend a more intensive screening regiment, including breast MRI, is one way The Breast Center at Midland Health is committed to saving lives.

Because a woman’s lifetime risk changes over time, we will be assessing her lifetime risk each time she comes into our center for imaging.

If you are a woman over the age of 40, remember getting your screening mammogram each year is your best first step to early detection of breast cancer. You can call 432-221-2300 to schedule your screening mammogram. You do not need a doctor’s order, just a practitioner who we can send the report. Then when you visit our center, we will assess your lifetime risk and guide you through the best plan of care.
