Bread is not the enemy! At least, not when it comes to the most popular breads in the world. These styles of bread range from buttery and dense to light and airy and there's something for everyone, depending on their own personal style and flavor preference. However, the top-rated bread in the world might not be exactly what you think - some of these have rarely been heard of outside of their country of origin, but that doesn't mean they're any less delicious than our usual go-to bread.

If there was any time to get out of one's comfort zone, now is the time! While most people were making sourdough in 2020 (as was proven by the sheer number of Google searches for sourdough recipes), the upcoming year is now the time to try something new. Some recipes might be a challenge but that only means the bread payoff will be high and whether it's created out of comfort or a need to show off on social media, you'll be thankful when the entire house smells like any one of these bread loaves or rolls. It's time to embrace the yeast and get our bread on.

Mekitsa

Mekitsa hails from Bulgaria and is actually a bread that's traditionally served during breakfast time, which already makes this bread a unique choice for a home baker. The dough itself is also quite simple to make and the cooking technique actually requires no oven at all but, rather, a hot stovetop.

The dough is very similar to that which a flatbread would be made from and rather than baking in the oven, the dough is fried in oil. It consists of water, flour, egg, yeast, salt, and yogurt, which makes it flavorful but not overwhelmingly so. When it's done frying, it's usually filled with honey, cheese, yogurt, or topped with powdered sugar.

Baguette

Almost everyone is familiar with baguettes. These traditional loaves of bread originated in France and are found all over its major cities and, usually, it's the scent of a freshly baked baguette that greets the nose before the sight of it greets the eyes. Baguettes go with almost everything and are the most traditional in terms of crusty, mild-flavored bread.

It's the air bubbles in the middle and the perfect exterior crunch that make this bread what it is and, while it's not the easiest recipe initially, a little practice always makes perfect. Rolling the dough into that specific baguette shape is likely what will take the longest but luckily, it's all of the imperfections of the natural bread that make it so unique and personal.

Pan de Queso

In Colombia, pan de queso is a very popular bread. These tiny rolls don't look like much but eating one will quickly change anyone's mind. They're central to the Paisa region where they've made and enjoyed in abundance, and the flour of choice is tapioca which lends a unique and fine texture to the bread along with a unique, mild flavor.

Grated cheese is also part of the flavoring process but it's really the cassava used in the recipe that puts it over the top. The cassava is fermented, and this is what allows each roll to be light and airy while also giving it that traditional starchy texture and flavor. This is another type of bread that's eaten commonly for breakfast and is usually filled with jelly or cream cheese, but can be found plain, as well.

Butter Garlic Naan

Naan bread has definitely gained popularity over the last few years and that's due to its deliciously buttery flavor. Similar to a flatbread, naan bread is traditional in Indian cooking and is often served as an accompaniment to the main dish. Butter and garlic are the two ingredients used most commonly to flavor the flatbread-like bread, along with yogurt, flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.

The process of baking naan bread is also quite different from a traditional bread loaf, as naan bread is usually cooked in a tandoor oven. Rather than adding the butter and garlic to the dough itself, the naan is brushed with each of these as it comes out of the oven, steaming hot and ready to soak up all of that delicious flavor. The naan bread doesn't have an overwhelming flavor but it does have more flavor than the others, but this flavor pairs perfectly with other Indian dishes such as curry and paneer. It can also be eaten on its own which isn't unusual, as it can be reheated and served as a quick snack.
